Photography can be used as a tool to promote and replace memory and it is this ability that fascinates me.

”

Jake McMylor’s photographic practice focuses on ideas of identity, memory and self, He attempts to visualise the invisible, and tell untold silent stories through images. Often featuring self-portraits, his work borders on the surreal with allusions to isolation throughout his practice. Jake experiences Aphantasia, this means he has no visual memory and so photographs become an integral part of the act of remembrance and thus his need for photography to be a source of memory is displayed throughout his work. Without photographs his past is blind, it makes photography just as much a necessity as it is an art form, it is an art form that allows Jake to experience a sense of self and an experience of the past.
